Lumen is a spatial installation composed of knitted cellular components. These components are generated through a form-finding process that adapts to both the materials and the site. The complex material behavior of knitted structures is integrated into a design process as an input for a bio-inspired generative design system. Knitting and textile fabrication provide a fertile ground for exploring the potential of non-standard fibrous materials. Similar to cell networks, the materials in Lumen self-organize, with the flow of tension forces acting through both geometry and material properties as active design parameters. This installation undertakes rigorous interdisciplinary experimentation to produce a multisensory environment. Lumen transforms throughout the day and night, fostering delight and inspiring collective play and interaction.
