birdnest pavilion
Category: Research
Collaborator: Shining Sun
Inspired by the structure of a bird's nest, this project explores the potential of aggregation-based granular structures. Each timber block functions as a granule, classified into three distinct types based on dimension and orientation. Within this framework, the timber blocks interlock to form a cohesive spatial structure, guided by a sequential construction logic. By carefully programming the orientation of each block, the porosity and depth of the pavilion’s envelope can be precisely controlled. The pavilion is assembled using an on-site collaborative robotic system, consisting of two industrial robots and a drone, working in tandem to achieve the desired structural complexity and precision.
